Back when I was a child, my “mother” was a sad, terrified, abused woman — struggling against this culture’s insane misogamy and repressive Puritanism, and against her horrific New England in-laws’ personification of ALL that, plus the ghosts of her own, horribly adverse childhood.
However, after I grew up (physically at least) and left home — through her sheer bravery (after my far worse “father” liberated her by conveniently DYING), my mother (aptly named “Grace”) sought and came into her own and then — we became dear / peer adult friends. I never HAD a “mother,” but she did role-model for me the possibility of overcoming EVERYTHING — to become one’s own person. So, happy “Grace” Day, dear soul!
